There are some jobs in sport that seem more like poisoned chalices than positions to celebrate when new managers are appointed and one man who seems to have taken that point aboard is none other than new Carolina Panthers coach, Ron Rivera.
To make matters worse for Rivera, who has taken on the challenge of leading the worst team in the NFL, this is his first position as coach in the NFL. Rivera is a man who has a wealth of experience in the league. He took charge of the Chargers' defense in 2008 at the midway point of the season and saw the team ranked number one in the league in terms of total defense and pass defense in the season just gone. He also built up a whole load of defensive experience in Chicago before joining up with the Chargers.
Experience aside, the challenge lying ahead of Rivera is a big one. He'll have to build up the confidence of a team that seems to be lacking in many things, but most of all talent. They'll need some changes in personnel if they are ever going to look like good NFL betting tips.
Although you don't need star names to succeed in sport, you do need a level of experience and composure, and at the moment the Panthers aren't able to even boast those attributes. With their offensive play particularly weak and problems at quarterback seeming tricky to solve, it won't be easy for the new manager and the NFL betting odds suggest they'll continue to struggle.
Rivera is a man who in all likelihood won't shy away from a challenge and if he can improve the fortunes of this side, who knows what bigger jobs await him in coaching in the future.
